Understanding Stock Brokerage and Regulatory Charges in India

When buying and selling shares or derivative contracts on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) or Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the visible difference between your Buy Price and Sell Price (Gross Profit) is not what lands in your bank account. Every financial market transaction is subject to a combination of broker commissions and mandatory statutory taxes levied by the Government of India, the state governments, SEBI, and the stock exchanges.

Understanding these charges is essential for active intraday traders, swing traders, and options scalpers to accurately compute their Breakeven Price and prevent hidden transaction friction from destroying their trading edge.

Comprehensive Breakdown of All Trading Taxes in India

1. Brokerage Fee

Charged by your discount or full-service stockbroker. Discount brokers (Zerodha, Angel One, Groww, Dhan) typically charge ₹20 per executed order or 0.03% (whichever is lower) for Intraday/F&O, and ₹0 for Delivery.

2. STT / CTT

Securities Transaction Tax collected directly by the Central Government. Delivery: 0.1% on Buy & Sell; Intraday: 0.025% on Sell; Futures: 0.02% on Sell; Options: 0.1% on Sell Premium value.

3. Exchange Txn Charge

Levied by NSE / BSE to maintain trading infrastructure. Standard NSE rates are ~0.00297% on Cash turnover, ~0.00173% on Futures turnover, and ~0.03503% on Options premium turnover.

4. 18% GST

Goods & Services Tax is charged at 18% on (Brokerage + Exchange Txn Charges + SEBI Turnover Fee). STT and Stamp Duty are exempt from GST.

5. State Stamp Duty

Collected centrally by the Indian Stamp Act on all Buy transactions. Delivery: 0.015% (₹1500/cr); Intraday: 0.003% (₹300/cr); Futures: 0.002% (₹200/cr); Options: 0.003% (₹300/cr).

6. SEBI Turnover Fee

Charged by the Securities and Exchange Board of India for market regulation at a uniform rate of ₹10 per crore (0.0001%) of total turnover.

Breakeven Calculation Formula for Traders

Active scalpers and day traders must always know their exact Breakeven point to avoid exiting trades at a net loss after taxes:

Breakeven Points Equation
\text{Breakeven Points} = \frac{\text{Total Taxes \& Charges (Brokerage + STT + GST + Stamp Duty + Exchange)}}{\text{Total Quantity Traded}}

Practical Trade Example (Equity Intraday MIS):

  • Buy: 200 shares of Reliance at ₹2,500 (Buy Value = ₹5,00,000)
  • Sell: 200 shares of Reliance at ₹2,520 (Sell Value = ₹5,04,000)
  • Turnover: ₹10,04,000
  • Gross Profit: ₹4,000
  • Total Charges: Brokerage (₹40) + STT (₹126) + Exchange (₹30) + GST (₹12.60) + Stamp Duty (₹15) + SEBI (₹1) = ₹224.60
  • Net Profit: ₹4,000 - ₹224.60 = ₹3,775.40
  • Breakeven Movement: ₹224.60 ÷ 200 = ₹1.12 per share

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between Flat Brokerage and Percentage Brokerage?
Discount brokers like Zerodha, Angel One, and Dhan charge a Flat fee (e.g. ₹20 per executed order), regardless of whether your trade size is ₹10,000 or ₹10,00,000. Traditional full-service brokers charge a percentage (e.g. 0.3% to 0.5% on delivery turnover), which can cost thousands of rupees for large trades.
Are delivery trades 100% free across all Indian discount brokers?
While several discount brokers charge ₹0 brokerage on Equity Delivery (CNC), mandatory government taxes like STT (0.1% Buy & Sell), Stamp Duty (0.015%), Exchange Transaction Fees, SEBI fees, 18% GST, and Depository DP Charges (approx ₹13.50 + GST on sell day) still apply.
How is STT calculated on Options trades?
STT on Options trading is levied at 0.1% (₹1000 per crore) on the Sell side, calculated strictly on the Premium Value (Option Premium × Quantity), NOT on the underlying strike price. If an in-the-money (ITM) option is exercised at expiry, physical settlement STT applies.
What is Call & Trade charge?
If you call your broker's dealing desk to place an order or if the broker auto-squares off your intraday MIS position at 3:15 PM due to lack of margin or manual exit, brokers levy an extra Call & Trade / Auto Square-off fee of ₹50 + 18% GST per order.
How does TradeX Journal help optimize brokerage costs?
TradeX automatically logs and computes all statutory exchange taxes and broker commissions per trade, displaying your net take-home ROI and alerting you when overtrading fees begin eroding your compounding edge.
